Thursday, 26-May-11

Yard
  • Ed raking up trimmings from baylaurel hedge. Mock orange blooming prettily. Another white-flowered shrub just beyond that also happy. Narcissus path ready for mowing. Grass not growing, but weeds and tree seeds are.
Pots
  • No sign of action in the anemone pot. Purchased petunia hanging basket nice. Also the one from last year with the return plant (self-seeded?) plus one pinkish white geranium.
  • Potted basil is lemon basil. I meant to get the Mediterranean one, oops.
Salad garden
  • One of the basils seems to have disappeared with the fosse septique emptying. Where we also discovered that a lot of the sage has rooted in the ground outside its pot. Should deal with this soon.
  • Still picking red-leaf lettuce.
  • Ed left only one of last year's cherry toms, but it's doing well.
South Forty
  • No sign of asparagus action.
  • Ben and Martha doing well, although Martha seems to have some kind of non-lethal fungus.
Potager
  • Summer squash doing well enough outside the fence, although they could use more mulch.
  • Leaving a narrow path at the end next to fence, I planted 4 staggered rows of corn. The last row (innermost) has two rolls of not-yet-germinated seeds.
  • The planting area is too wide to reach the middle from the sides, so I'm leaving some little paths in between blocks of plants.
  • Planted out broccolis, all nine of them. (Eggplants still haven't germinated.)
  • Planted haricots verts on the odd number hoops between the tomatoes; planted fêves on the even numbered hoops. Right in the ground.
Entry
  • Perpetually ugly.

Monday, 16-May-11

Ok, not being very good with this. Quite a bit has happened, with not posts. All that Ican remember right now is that I planted corn seeds last Thursday. And there are 5 beefsteak tomatoes in the potager along with two hills of summer squash (one zucchini, one globe) outside the fenced area.

Yard
  • Ed sawed down the krulwilg and is busy cutting up the bits.
Pots
  • Moved three jalapeño babies into the pot where I put some chilepetin seeds; no action from them. Still lots of jalapeño babies, what to do with them?
  • The poblano/ancho seeds have started germinating at last, so maybe I should try again with chilepetins.
  • Potted seeds of broccoli (9) and eggplant (6).
  • Potted seeds of nasturiums (8) and sweet peas (8), both climbing type.
  • Put the anemone bulbs in a pot whose dirt had been mixed with the water-holding gel. We'll see how that goes. Many too many bulbs for a 30cm pot.
Salad garden
  • The four cilantro plants are doing OK, as are the four basil plants. (The fifth cilantro died; the fifth basil is in a pot.)
  • The garlic I planted last fall has been eaten by something.
  • Ed cleared most of the babies from last year's cherry tomatoes, leaving two behind.
  • Lots of the red-leaf lettuce collapsed, but the rest looks quite happy and we've been eating it.
South Forty
  • Horseradish has come back finally, behind the probable forsythia, which is doing OK.
  • Ben is doing well; Martha has some bug damage, but looking OK to me. (Ed worries.)
Potager
  • Put the five cherry tomatoes in the ground. Several have flowers already. Put bamboo hoops between them (where we'll put beans) and a spiral "stick" at each tomato. Next we'll run a bamboo pole between the hoops.
  • Munched some fraises de bois.
Entry
  • Nothing happening here.

Yard
  • Yesterday Pogo chewed the stick marking the tiny burnt orchid, trampling the orchid in the process. This morning he carried off the new stick and I haven't found the orchid again.
  • Lilies of the valley blooming happily.
  • Daylilies growing happily.
  • The iris from Club Liseron (what color were they I wonder?) have buds now.
Pots
  • Two days ago, I put the rest of the red and white (all but one) geraniums in the pot for the glass brick window. The extra white one went in the center of last year's hanging petunia basket, where a petunia of two seems to be making a comeback.
Salad garden
  • Lettuce looking good. Basil not.
South Forty
  • There are a zillion burnt orchids just below the birches. We've marked a bunch, but Ed found another when he mowed Tuesday evening. Early purple orchid still blooming too.
Potager
  • No sign of chives
  • Wild strawberries looking happy
  • Yesterday we got tomato plants (a mixture of cherry ones plus a group of beefsteak, which are supposed to have few seeds), basil plants (a mixture), and cilantro plants in the post, in the cutest little green greenhouse things, with each plant in each own slot. All but the cilantro look quite healthy. The cilanto looks puny as it usually seems to; even full-grown it looks fragile. Today I potted these up into half toilet paper rolls. Maybe when we return they'll be ready to put into the ground.

Saturday, 16-Apr-11

South Forty
  • The burnt orchid is still there just below the birches; ditto the common early purple below the potager (although I'm wondering if this is another variety).
  • The possible forsythia (loto plant) planted yesterday in the NE corner (just below where I planted horseradish last year--no sign of this yet) looks fine.
Potager
  • Fraises de bois in the potager are doing fine; some fruits beginning!
  • Packet of ciboule blanche seeds (ciboule blanche, Allium schoenoprasum L.) said it had 250. Not. Virgo Kaye counted 146. Planted 3 rows next to the fraises de bois. Pooh. These were supposed to be green onions, but now I think they're chives. Boo. Should be, I think Allium fistulosum aka Welsh onion (oh?).
  • Planted in pots seeds for regular courgettes and round courgettes.
  • Many jalapeño seeds are up; none of "ancho" chiles, which should be poblano. No chilepetins showing their heads.
  • Discovered Germinance had not yet delivered seeds I want to pot now. :-(
Yard
  • Lilies of the valley blooming.
  • Lawn around flowering cherry is pink with petals.
  • Orchis ustulata still there, very small.
Pots
  • Put mystery shrub from loto into a proper pot.
  • Put lavender from loto into a proper pot.

  • Put red and white geraniums into pots on fence either side of gate.
Salad garden
  • Lettuce looking lively.

Getting started

A place to record our gardening activities. Maybe it will work, maybe not.

Interesting that blogspot offered this "gardening" look template when I created the blog. That's not the default for the group. But it's OK so I'll keep it for a while.
